Countercultural

The most radical, countercultural truth today is this: I am not my own.

Modern culture chants a familiar creed: “I am my own.” It’s a mantra of autonomy, echoed in slogans of self-love, self-expression, and self-discovery. We are told to follow our hearts, live our truth, and chase our dreams. The most radical, countercultural truth today is this: I am not my own.

That simple confession turns the world upside down. If I belong to Jesus, then my body, my desires, even my dreams, are not mine to glorify but His. As Paul declares, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (I Corinthians 6:19-20). That is not a call to self-celebration, but to self-denial. Not autonomy, but surrender. Not self-made identity, but God-given purpose.

To say “I am not my own” is to declare war on the central lie of our age—that life is about me. We were made for something more. In the kingdom of God, the way up is down. The way to life is through death. The path to greatness is the path of the cross.

We aren’t countercultural just to be different—we are countercultural because we follow a crucified King. And He invites us to join His grand mission because He loves to love others with us. How countercultural to realize that God has us on this earth for a story that is not mainly about us but is for someone else and ultimately for His glory.

A church that mirrors culture has nothing to offer it. However, a church that lives out the radical way of Jesus will shine like a city on a hill. In every age, the world will call us to conform. But Jesus still whispers, “Follow Me.” That call will never be popular. It will not be easy. But it will always be worth it.
